Description
“First and Only” speaks to the dynamic of being the first in numerous categories of our lives. It speaks to what it is like to be the first in one’s family to graduate college, the first in one’s family to lead a company, the first to hold a board position, the first in one’s family to obtain an advanced degree or the first one to speak up and question mistreatment. It gives voice to what it is like being the only Black woman in a leadership position, the only Black woman to lead a university department, a board, etc. There is a loneliness that accompanies such positions. In addition to loneliness, Black women in these positions must navigate a tricky terrain of race, gender, sexual orientation in spaces that were not always set up to welcome or support or even have us. First and Only speaks directly to and affirms women in these situations.
