Description
This is the story of a young girl who learns about the importance of water from her grandmother, and the threat of the black snake (oil pipelines) to water and life. She rallies her people to come together and fight it—“We are water protectors. We stand!”
I am in awe at how absolutely gorgeous these illustrations are. You will love it for the art as well as the message. My daughter enjoys this at 22 months, and I believe she can enjoy it for many years to come as she understand more of the story.
This book was inspired by the indigenous-led movements to fight oil pipelines, particularly the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, who eventually joined with more than five hundred Indigenous Nations from all over the world to stand for clean water and fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) in 2016-17. The book ends with a pledge that young readers can sign to honor the Earth and all its living beings, treating them with kindness and respect.
